Having encountered many power outages, I have created a suggested Emergency Kit checklist that should help you “weather the storm.”

Emergency Kit Checklist

Note that in a longer outage, you may need to get by without lights, hot water, ability to cook food and even running water. Recommend that you stock up on enough supplies to last at least three days, including:

  • A wind up of battery powered flashlight with fresh and spare batteries
  • A wind up or battery powered radio
  • Cell phone and portable charger/power bank
  • First aid kit
  • Non-perishable, ready-to-eat foods
  • Manual can opener
  • Bottled water (2 litres of water per person per day)
  • Extra cash and change
  • Extra keys for your home and vehicle(s)
  • Warm clothing and blankets
  • Toilet paper
  • A loud whistle (to attract attention)

Extra items to consider

  • Supplies for people with special needs
  • Infant formula, baby food and supplies
  • Candles and matches or a lighter
  • Light sticks or LED flashlight
  • Emergency poncho
  • Important documents
  • Prescription medications
  • Additional supplies for pets
  • Scissors and a pocket knife
  • Hand, foot and body warmers
  • Siphon pump
  • Duct tape
  • Garbage Bags with ties
  • Change of clothing (if at all possible)

The above items are suggestions only and you can create your own list dependant on your own needs.
